about

Orange Hat's tight harmonies, swirling psychedelia, and twisted pop tendencies are in full bloom on Pterodactyl Universe. Our in-house songwriting paleontologists explore heartbroken microorganisms, carnival relationships in need of an exorcist, mariachis gone mad, and of course Sleestaks.

Having spent the previous few years pulling a live band together and recording a mostly-improvised album, Zeus and Christo were ready for the next project. When the live band fell apart, the dynamic duo gathered up a backlog of songs and retreated to a 40-acre estate in the country to record on a vintage 8-track reel-to-reel. Two years later, they emerged from their rural studio enclave with this collection of dayglo nuggets rife with thrift store instrumentation, wistful pop-obsession and warped Wagnerian ambition.

Pterodactyl Universe was originally released in 1995 on cassette, and that remained the only portal to this universe for the next 16 years. In 2011, all 18 original songs plus two previously unidentified fossils were unearthed by Orange Hat and scientifically remastered by Jimmy Ether. Special guests include Orange Hat's psychic mentor John Henry, Zeus' vocal clone Amy Henderson and guitarist extraordinaire David Patterson.

Smart power pop meets the groovy sound of the psychedelic sixties in Atlanta-based band Orange Hat. But, the Hat is more than a band - it's an ongoing multimedia circus. In addition to albums full of songs with cool harmonies and catchy hooks, Orange Hat's canon of insanity includes a twisted TV show with an expanded cast of freaks. Step right this way... ... more
